Press Release: Nick Herbert's resignation

November 6, 2019 11:03 PM

Tories and Labour in disarray with no candidates

Lib Dems only major party with established candidate for Arundel & South Downs, as Tories and Labour scramble to field candidates

With Tuesday's shock resignation of Arundel & South Downs Conservative MP, Nick Herbert, the Liberal Democrats have accused both the Tories and Labour of taking local voters for granted by failing to name candidates for the general election - an election which has been expected for many months.

Herbert joins a procession of moderate Conservative Sussex MPs who have abandoned Westminster following their party's lurch to the right. Both Sir Nicholas Soames and Amber Rudd have stepped down in the wake of Boris Johnson becoming Prime Minister.

Liberal Democrat candidate for the constituency, Alison Bennett said many voters would be left feeling taken for granted by the Conservatives. She said: "This constituency has been one of the safest Conservative seats in the country. But voters have seen their loyalty rewarded by underfunded local hospitals, social care, education and policing. That is why at both the local and European elections we saw a huge swing to the Liberal Democrats in this constituency."

She added: "As Lib Dem Group Opposition Leader on Mid Sussex District Council I am now the most familiar face in this race. I am committed to giving Arundel & South Downs voters their voice in Parliament."

Bennett paid tribute to Nick Herbert, who is departing after 15 years as an MP. She said he had engaged with many local groups, been active in promoting LGBT equality and had campaigned to eradicate tuberculosis around the world through his work with Global TB Caucus. Despite this, on the critical issue of Europe he has let his constituents down, "I met Nick when we campaigned together in the June 2016 EU Referendum. He was after all once a leading Remainer within his party. I am looking forward to being Arundel and South Downs' voice in Parliament to Stop Brexit. Only by stopping Brexit can we ensure that we focus on the real issues in the constituency so that we can Build a Brighter Future for us all."
