Press Release: Welcome to the Constituency

Welcome to the Constituency

Boris Johnson's man is parachuted in as Conservative Candidate in Arundel and South Downs

Liberal Democrat candidate for Arundel and South Downs, Alison Bennett, has welcomed the announcement that Andrew Griffith has been selected by the Conservatives to stand against her in the General Election, following the resignation of the long-standing incumbent Nick Herbert.

Welcoming Andrew Griffith to West Sussex, Bennett, who has lived in the constituency for a number of years and is a local councillor, said she looked forward to debating with him. She said: "It is a shame neither the Conservatives nor Labour were able to source a candidate who has a long term understanding of Arundel and South Downs. It will make discussing local issues harder, given they haven't had a chance to meet many of the people they hope to represent."

Bennett said: "For years the Conservatives have taken the voters in this constituency for granted, always assuming their man will get voted in. Yesterday's selection is no different. Mr Griffith is a key player in the Johnson regime. He lent his London home to Mr Johnson during the Conservative leadership campaign, and worked as a key Government business adviser as well as retaining roles as a Senior Executive at Sky over the summer1."

She continued, "Parachuting a London multimillionaire into the seat four weeks before polling day reminds us of the hallmark arrogance of Mr Johnson's premiership. From countless conversations with Arundel and South Downs voters, I think the Conservatives have underestimated the appetite for change."

Bennett also commented that unlike Labour, the Liberal Democrats were intent on winning the seat, rather than simply taking part in the election. "We are here to win. We are here to make a difference. We understand the constituency and we are serious about giving West Sussex its voice back in Parliament. The role of an MP should not be simply seen as a job for life."

She said the Liberal Democrat's strong showing in the constituency, during the recent local and European elections, meant voters could now support a party which would prioritise local issues over delivering an economically damaging Brexit.
